Summary
Recently, swimmer Lia Thomas made history when she became the first known transgender athlete to win a division I National championship in any sport. Predictably, the blowback has been intense. With so much conversation again focused on trans athletes, we wanted to bring you an episode we did last year that features two groundbreaking trans athletes telling their own stories.
First CeCé Telfer, the first openly trans woman to win a National Collegiate Athletic Association title, joins Imara to discuss her historic win, how the attacks on trans girls in sports is rooted in anti-Black racism, and how she continues to follow her passion despite the backlash.
Plus, Chris Mosier, the first openly trans athlete to represent the US in an international competition, comes on the show to discuss his career and the importance of making space for other trans athletes. And, for our moment of Trans Joy this episode, we celebrate Luca Page who started RadicallyFit, a gym that centers queer, trans, POC, big bodied and fat identified people.

| 0:00.0 | Hey, Sam, it's Amara. Welcome to the TransLash podcast, where we tell trans |
| 0:12.1 | stories to save trans lives. We talked a lot about the legislative attacks on trans people |
| 0:17.9 | in the past few months, especially the bills targeted to keep trans |
| 0:22.6 | people out of sports. |
| 0:24.4 | Sadly, this conversation has turned all the way up, though, with Leah Thomas becoming |
| 0:29.6 | the first out transgender athlete to capture a Division I national title in any sport when |
| 0:36.0 | she won the women's 500 freestyle and swimming last month. |
| 0:40.4 | That's a mouthful. |
| 0:41.8 | The reaction to the UPenn swimmer's ability to compete has been swift and downright mean. |
| 0:48.0 | Those trolling Leah by protesting outside of the venues where she competes include Barbara E. Hart. |
| 0:55.8 | Barbara is the Idaho state legislator who authored the first anti-trans sports bill to pass in America. We profiled Barbara |
| 1:01.7 | and our anti-trans hate machine podcast last summer. But what surprised me is that this meanness |
| 1:09.0 | isn't only limited to the extreme right. My social media timeline |
| 1:13.4 | and those of countless others in our community who we thought were allies, demeaned Leah with |
| 1:19.5 | terrible comments and memes. Now, understandably, Leah isn't talking to the press, but last year, |
| 1:27.2 | two incredible athletes, Chris Mosier, |
| 1:30.2 | the first trans man to compete in Olympic trials, and Cece Telfor, the first trans woman to ever |
| 1:36.9 | win an NCAA title, spoke to us about the reality of what it's like for trans athletes. |
| 1:43.3 | Because this conversation separates out fact from |
| 1:46.8 | fiction, we thought it was critical to bring these two powerful voices and perspectives to you again. |
| 1:53.6 | But like always, we begin with trans joy. |
| 2:16.4 | One thing lifting my spirits this week is people in our communities who are creating new spaces for us to thrive. |
