1983 at London's Heathrow Airport, a gang of six men carried out Britain's biggest ever armed robbery.

They went in for 3 million and walked out with 26 million pounds worth of gold.

Over the past three decades, as the crime correspondent for Sky News,

I've reported on the biggest stories in Britain.

But the reason I've returned to this crime after more than 35 years is because of a former

detective who's breaking his silence for the first time to speak exclusively to Sky News.

I think not only did it capture the imagination of the police, it captured the imagination of the nation.

I mean, it was the biggest thing ever.

Working undercover, former detective superintendent Ian Brown was given the job of recovering the 6,800 bars of stolen gold.

He couldn't have imagined that job would see him and an elite group of Scotland Yard

detectives encounter murder, international crime gangs and millions in cash hidden on tropical

islands.

My chief superintendent said, yeah, but what I'd actually like to do

is to see if you can find something about the gold,

see if we can trace that,

because nobody knows where it is

or what's happened to it.
