We moderns are enamored of progress.

We live at a time when things shiny and new are prized, far above things old and time-worn. For most of us, tradition is little more than a quirky and nostalgic

sentimentalism. It's hardly more than the droning, monotonous succession of obsolete notions, anachronous,

ideals, and antiquarian habits, sound and fury signifying nothing.

Henry Ford called an awareness of history and an appreciation for the past mere bunk. Augustine Borell called it a dust heap. Guy de Mappesant

dubbed it that excitable and lying old lady. But the sage Samuel Johnson retorted, a contempt of the

monuments and the wisdom of the past may be justly reckoned

one of the reigning follies of these days to which pride and idleness have equally contributed.

He understood that connections to the past are the only sure leads to the future. History is not just the

concern of historians and social scientists. It's not the lonely domain of political prognosticators

and ivory tower academics. It's the stuff of life. And as Winston Churchill declared, the greatest advances in human

civilization have come when we have recovered what we had lost when we learned the lessons

of history. In fact, it is the very stuff of faith. The Bible puts a heavy

emphasis on historical awareness, not at all surprising, considering the fact that the vast

proportion of its own contents record the dealings of God with men and nations throughout the ages. God calls upon his people

to remember. He calls upon them to remember the bondage, oppression, and deliverance of Egypt.

He calls upon them to remember the splendor, strength, and devotion of the Davidic kingdom.
