Summary

In Reformed Theology, we hold firm to the tradition of true doctrine - we believe it's invaluable to aiding an understanding of our faith and more importantly we believe scripture to be the supreme and normative source of what we believe. Yet why are so many evangelicals leery of combining the words: 'tradition' and 'true doctrine'? In the end, they help define divine realities, and more importantly, lend accurate descriptions of God. Maybe more alarming is not the lay person who misunderstands traditional doctrine, but those who don't preach it from the pulpit or teach it from the lectern. It's necessary that the Church connect scripture to the traditional doctrinal statements lest she get swept away by every wind of novel doctrine. The Alliance of Confessing Evangelicals would like to offer you a free MP3 download entitled "The Developing Tradition: From the Reformation Until Now". the recent ongoing debate about the Trinity,

has indicated that not all evangelicals seem to understand

either the importance of doctrine

or how doctrine is connected to the church's tradition of teaching.

1:44.5

Often as Protestants, we think that tradition has a horribly Roman Catholic sound to it.

1:50.1

It seems to imply that scripture is less than authoritative, whereas in actual fact, of course,

1:56.3

what historic Protestantism has always held to is a scripturally sourced and regulated form of tradition.

2:05.4

The difference between us and Roman Catholics is not that they hold tradition and we reject it.

2:11.5

It's that they hold to a tradition that can stand somewhat independent from Scripture,

2:15.6

while as for us, scripture is both the source

and the norming norm of our tradition. And on the doctrine side of things, sometimes
