Summary

How many positions should you trade at a time? 5, 10, 15, 50, 100? How many positions you are willing to trade will determine how much capital you allocate to each of your trade. In this podcast I talk about the pros and cons of each and what it can mean to your trading success.

Hey, I'm Ryan Mallory, and this is my swing trading, the stock market podcast.

0:11.3

I'm here to teach you how to trade in a complex, ever-changing world of finance.

0:16.2

Learn what it means to trade profitably and consistently, managing risk, avoiding the pitfalls of trading,

0:21.9

and most importantly, to let those winners run wild. You can succeed at the stock market,

0:27.4

and I'm ready to show you how. Hey, everybody, this is Ryan Mallory, who is Swing trading the stock

0:32.4

market, and today I'm going to talk about a few positions in your portfolio versus having

0:37.4

a lot of positions in your

0:38.5

portfolio. And what I'm trying to say here is not, okay, if it's a bare market, you're not

0:42.3

going to have as many long positions or if it's a bull market, you're not going to have as

0:46.2

many short positions. No, I'm just basically saying, how much are you willing to put on each

0:51.2

position in terms of percentage of overall capital? So for some, if you're only willing to trade five positions at a time and you're fully

0:57.9

invested in the market, you're only going to have like 20% on each trading.

1:02.5

I shouldn't say you're only going to have because 20% on a single trade is a lot.

1:06.2

But if you're trading like, let's say, 20 or 25 positions, let's just make it an even round number,

1:11.7

20 positions in your account at one time, then you're going to be putting 5% on each trade.

1:15.8

So the difference between 5% on a trade versus 20% on a trade, it's a big difference.

1:21.1

So what I'm doing here is not trying to say whether having a lot of positions is the better

1:26.7

way for you to go in your trading or having a few

1:28.8

positions is a better way to make profits in the stock market. I'm not trying to say either one of

1:33.8

those things. What I'm trying to do in this podcast here is highlight the differences between trading

1:38.4

with a lot of positions versus trading with just a few positions. For instance, when it comes to

1:43.3

making profits in the stock market,
