Summary

Chris Jerard is a mastermind when it comes to building things in the world of sliding on snow. A serial entrepreneur, Chris had a unique inspiration in high school that drove him to pursue his passions instead of opting for a safe law career. On the podcast, we talk about that inspiration, the beginnings of Freeskier Magazine, his perfectly timed pivot to digital, founding start-ups, and his current role as VP of Content Marketing at Outside. It's a peek behind the curtain of some of the most influential media properties in the business.

It's time to talk some shit on the Powell Movement.

Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:16.9

I'm your host Mike Powell, and if you follow the ski news, you saw that Jeremy Nobis died in a jail cell this week.

0:23.5

This is such a sad story.

0:25.5

As while, I didn't know Jeremy personally, other than our podcast and way too many late-night text messages,

0:31.7

he was one of those skiers that totally changed the game of Big Mountain skiing, starting with what he did in TGR's harvest, and he could

0:38.5

still have been putting together epic movie parts if it weren't for his love of alcohol.

0:43.1

It's no secret that Nobus had a problem with drinking. I personally believe that that,

0:47.6

and who knows what else, contributed to some form of mental illness. Like I said, this is a sad

0:52.7

story and it could have been avoided. Maybe. I mean,

0:56.0

if you see a friend going through demons with alcohol, with most people, it's best to intervene.

1:01.3

With Jeremy, people have tried over the years, but there always are some people, like Jeremy,

1:06.1

who only have one speed, and that's both a blessing and a curse. The ski in the snowboard industry is a

1:11.9

revolving door of adrenaline and alcohol, it seems like. That's part of the reason why I went

1:16.7

with Best Day Brewing as a sponsor this season, because it's time to stop glorifying alcohol

1:21.1

in this industry, and I wanted to let me and others know that alcohol doesn't always have to be

1:26.2

the choice. While this is such a huge

1:28.4

loss for skiing, I hope Jeremy has found some peace and that his demons are gone. I'm so sorry

1:33.7

for his family, his friends, and anyone he had an impact on. I'm stoked that I was able to get him

1:38.6

to really drop his guard and talk about the real shit when we podcasted. Jeremy, thank you for that.

1:43.7

You will be missed.
