Welcome to the Powell Movement.

0:17.1

I'm your host, Mike Powell, and if you're like me, you love the mountains, but you also love technology.

0:22.6

I remember way back to when I first started working for K2 in 2000 when I had a Palm Pilot.

0:28.2

I mainly used it to make bets on sketchy gambling sites, so I wouldn't be too bored when I went on long drives to ski areas and the Poconos, which I seem to do every week.

0:37.2

I never cashed in on any of my

0:39.0

winnings, so I'm guessing I most likely lost a few hundred dollars on that Palm Pilot gambling

0:43.4

escapades, but that was the start of my technology addiction. Fast forward a few years, and I get a job

0:49.7

managing the K2 inline skate team. These were the days when to be a team manager, you had to have a portable DVD player,

0:56.8

as my laptop was too bulky to have to pull out every time I got on an airplane, which seemed

to be every week.

And back then, I remember meeting a guy in the inline industry, a guy named Andy Critchlow,

1:07.2

and Critch told me in a pre-social media world that he was leaving the inline business to take a job in the mobile phone industry.

1:14.1

And he swore to me that, believe it or not, soon everyone would be watching TV and movies on their phone, people would be shopping.

1:21.6

In his eyes, the mobile phone was the future. And this was like in 2003, and I hope Critch is rich these days as he

1:28.8

definitely saw the future before a lot of people. Anyways, I was blown away with his vision,

1:34.3

and I always tried to make sure that I had the best smartphone out. Eventually, I got the new

1:38.8

iPhone, and it was game over. I was fully hooked on this tech, just like a lot of you.

1:44.1

Now, most of us have some sort of phone addiction these days, and I've been pretty good about

1:48.4

not getting hooked into TikTok, as I've seen how it captivates my wife and son for way

too many hours.
