On Monday of this week, the United States hit the grim milestone of 1 million deaths

from COVID-19, according to an associated press analysis of death certificate data.

Although we know that behind every number there is a person, that number in and of itself

is hard to wrap your head around.

One million people.

One million empty chairs around the dinner table, each an irreplaceable loss, President

Joe Biden said in the statement, each leaving behind a family, a community, and a nation

forever changed because of this pandemic.

And that, of course, is just the number of U.S. COVID-19 deaths.

Globally, there have been more than 6.2 million deaths, and that's likely an undercount.

But the number of deaths in the United States is nearly twice that of the next country

India.

And the nation is still losing more than 300 people a day to the virus.
