Anyway, the result of the first ballot of Conservative MPs who have the task, remember, of cutting down

a field of 10 to 2 over the next week or so, two names to go before the Conservative Party

membership in a postal vote to elect a new leader who will also become Prime Minister.

The result of that ballot was Boris Johnson 114 votes.

Jeremy Hunt 43, Michael Gove 37, Dominic Rab 27,

Sajid Javid 23, Matt Hancock 20 and Rory Stewart 19.

All of those qualified to go through to the second ballot.

Eliminated were Andrea Ledsoom with 11 votes,

Mark Harper with 10 and Esther McVeigh with 9, which means amongst other things that the next

Prime Minister will be a man. Okay, well, let's get the initial response from our panel this week.

Tim Montgomery, what do you make of this field and the results amongst MPs?

Well, do you remember the conventional wisdom a little while ago, Adam?

We were told that Boris would struggle to get through the MPs stage.

Well, there was even something called Operation Arse, apparently, to stop him amongst

Conservative Scottish MPs.
