Summary

Gene D was a very popular AA speaker in his day. This is Gene speaking at the Great Topics meeting on the topic, Why They Return to Drinking. This was recorded in December of 1974 at an unknown place, it is an excellent quality recording for that old, but it does end a bit abruptly. AA International Update: All the conference reserved hotels are sold out, over 22,000 people have already registered. Efforts are being made to find additional hotel space, some room is still available in the university dorms (your best deal). I added a hotel zone map to the event listing with a link to a more detailed pdf. At the moment you would be lucky to find a hotel close to the venue for under $600 per night with most well above 1k. If you look an hour+ from downtown your still in the $3-400.ish range, if you are thinking of going book sooner rather than later. Have a great day.

0:24.7

Today I want to talk a little bit about what would refer to in that paragraph despite all we can say, many who are real

0:37.4

alcoholics are not going to believe that. There are some figures that are

0:41.9

bandied around the program of Alcoholics Anonymous, which are nothing

0:46.6

more than an educated guess.

0:50.6

These figures say that 50% of the people who approach the program of Alcoholics Anonymous

0:55.1

never take another drink after their first approach.

0:58.0

The figures go on to say that 25% will go out and try to drink some more, then they too eventually will achieve

1:09.0

sobriety after suffering a little bit more. Then the figures say the 25% of the original people coming

1:17.9

to this program will never achieve that sobriety. And it's my own opinion that these people, these 25%, who will

1:28.4

lead the lives of practicing alcoholics, will lead a life that can be commonly referred to in a cliche form as a living

1:37.6

death.

1:38.6

Because I believe the life of a practicing alcoholic is far worse in the finality of death. Now why do things

1:49.6

like this happen? Why do people who apparently sit here seem to have a normal degree of

1:58.4

intelligence, average degree of sincerity and an attempt at this sobriety, why will some of us choose to drink again?
