My name is Tim, I'm now a colleague.

Thank you for having me here in Sydney, thank you to all of the organisers, thank you to

the other speakers and thank you to the hosts, I've been carried through the last two weeks

down on the Biopower, greater than myself and you've all been the channel for that.

In January 1992, I was rifling around somewhere in my parents house.

I'd had the best part of a bottle of whiskey, it was the middle of the night and I found

a file and then the file was a set of papers and I soon realised the papers were notes

written by my brother when he was at university, he studied philosophy and they were his philosophy

notes and interleaved in these philosophy notes were letters he'd written in the middle

of the night and didn't send, once he'd read them back the next morning, before posting

them, he clearly decided these can't be sent and there was a point of identification

because I spent a lot of my drinking writing letters to people in the middle of the night

and then not being able to send them when I read them back the next morning, this was

in the days before email.

And in one of the letters he wrote about his drinking and he felt like he was sitting

on top of a volcano and the only thing which stopped the volcano was erupting was alcohol

and that's why he was continuing to drink the way he was drinking despite the consequences
