Who is Mick Mulvaney? Well, until recently, of course, he was Donald Trump's acting chief of staff,

the man who effectively ran his White House operation for 15 months of his presidency.

But what's of particular interest to us in this part of the world is that he's the newly appointed US Special Envoy for Northern Ireland.

Mr. Mulvaney is my guest on this edition of Red Line. So it's a

transatlantic. Hello to you, Mick, and thank you for joining us today. It is a true pleasure.

It's a pleasure to meet you and to be here. Well, hopefully we'll get a chance to meet face-to-face

at some stage in the not-too-distant future, but this is a different kind of diplomacy, probably to the kind of diplomacy

that you signed up to. We'll talk about that in a moment or two. Tell me, first of all,

what do people need to know about Mick Mulvaney? Oh, goodness gracious, as little as possible.

No, let's see. I'm sitting to you live from my house in just outside of Charlotte, North Carolina, where

I've lived my entire life.

I will not go back to the beginning, obviously.

The story that was probably of interest to use that this is a position that I've been interested

in a long time.

I worked on issues involving the Republic of Ireland when in a long time. I worked on on issues

involving the Republic of Ireland when I was in Congress. I was there for six years. For some

reason, stayed engaged on those issues when the president asked me to run the Office of Management

and Budget, which is a member of the cabinet, which I did for effectively three years. I was

only over there about two because I started

working directly for the president's chief of staff about a year ago, a year and a half ago now.

And one late Friday afternoon in December of 2018, the president had asked me to serve two jobs.
