Hi and welcome to the Orvis Fly Fishing Podcast. This podcast is being recorded on

0:27.8

December 23rd 2016. And a little bit later in the show, we're going to be talking with Stephen Woodruff about

0:37.0

steelhead fishing in the state of Washington. So we've kind of missed the best part of the steelhead season. So hopefully you can use a lot of this information

0:48.0

for planning for next season and also we're going to talk a bit about

0:58.4

Fly Fishing for trout on the Yakima River, which does go on all winter. So you'll get some hot tips on what to do this winter if you live in the state of Washington or if

1:05.0

you plan on fishing in the state of Washington. But first let's go to the

1:09.5

flybox and I'm going to start this week with an email from Avery. Just got back from a trip to Colorado and now I have the itch.

1:25.2

Got to fish the middle fork of the South Platte and I got three small browns in the span of an hour.

1:30.0

Great fishing. The reason that I didn't catch more was that I was fishing over the main current

1:34.8

to the foam eddies with a size 16 Al-Kair cadis where the browns are rising and after a great cast

1:40.6

eventually my fly would create wakes on the surface due to the stronger current pulling on my fly line

1:45.2

in the center of the river. However, when I tried to mend my line my fly would dip

1:49.2

under the surface and I would have to recast. I noted afterwards that the three fish I caught were all caught before the flies started to create these wakes.

1:57.0

How do you successfully fish dries over a stronger current? Am I mending incorrectly? A couple issues here, Avery. First of

2:07.6

all, once you mended that Alcare Cattis and you were getting a drag-free caddis and you were getting a drag-free drift with a fly underwater,

2:19.0

it may be worth it to let that fly keep floating down and it may even pop back up

2:27.6

Which can be a good thing it can be very realistic for your fly to for your fly to pop back up after it's been sunken. So I wouldn't I

2:37.8

wouldn't worry too much about that but there's a bigger issue here and that is mending with a dry fly.

2:47.0

I don't recommend mending with a dry fly.
