When Johnny Orr joined the Glendale Fire Department in Southern California as an arson investigator,

people at first found him to be a bit strange.

Having failed to join the LAPD, the frustrated would-be policemen would often chase down shoplifters,

robbers and burglars in his fire truck.

Regardless of this, though, his uncanny ability to be the first firefighter to appear on the

scene gained him respect among his peers.

In the mid-1980s, a series of fires plagued the city of angels, causing millions of dollars

in property damage.

On October 10, 1984, a large fire broke out at the Olds Home Center hardware store in

a shopping mall in South Pasadena.
