You pull into a parking lot, scanning for a place to stay, and find that your options are pretty limited.

There is one vacancy, a place that you might otherwise pass by without a second thought,

but exhaustion has a way of lowering your standards. That place is the clown motel.

If you have even a mild discomfort around clowns, it registers the moment you step inside.

The lobby is filled with them.

Not in small numbers or as an occasional decoration, but an overwhelming volume.

Shelds, walls, and display cases are lined with figures, each one frozen in a painted expression that is meant to be cheerful,

but feels anything but. There are thousands of them, each slightly different, each positioned

in a way that suggests careful placement rather than casual accumulation. You complete the check-in

process, take your key and head to your room quickly.

Once inside, the space is quiet, a temporary refuge from the visual intensity of the lobby
