Summary
On this episode of Tommy Talk, Tommy dives into the unwritten rules for calling, texting and FaceTiming. Is it ever okay to rogue FaceTime someone? Are voice notes longer than one minute annoying or actually appreciated? How long should someone take to respond to a text? Does anyone even leave voicemails anymore, and do they still have value? Tommy shares his millennial perspective, then turns to his two Gen Z producers, Celia and Steph, to find out what really triggers them when it comes to phone communication in 2026. From hot takes to hard truths, let’s see how many of these situations you relate to and whether any of our opinions change the way you think about communicating in the modern world.

| 0:09.5 | Today's a really special edition because I have some amazing friends joining me, |
| 0:13.8 | some of my amazing team here at IHeart, and we are talking about text message etiquettes. |
| 0:19.5 | This is a hot topic button because I feel like all of us respond to how people |
| 0:23.6 | communicate via text in different ways. |
| 0:25.8 | So for me, the number one thing that drives me crazy is a rogue face time. |
| 0:30.7 | I don't know about you guys. |
| 0:31.6 | I hate when somebody face times me and I'm not ready for it. |
| 0:34.5 | It's, I don't know, what if I'm out of the shower or on the subway or just not wanting to be on camera and then I have a FaceTime and I feel obligated to answer the call and I get stressed and I don't know what to do and then I don't pick up and then you get annoyed I don't pick up and then you won't answer my regular call because you want to FaceTime. Why does it always have to be a face time? |
| 0:54.4 | Why? I don't understand that. There are probably two people that I'll allow rogue face times from, |
| 0:59.5 | and I will gladly accept them, but it was a process to get me there. It was a process. I |
| 1:05.8 | can't say I willingly hit accept. I would call them back regularly, and then they would really get not so happy with me about that. So we made it work, and now I accept Rogue FaceTime from two people. But other than that, I don't love it. And I still don't love it, to be honest. I still don't love it. I much rather put the phone on, have speaker phone on, and have a conversation. I don't get why we have to always see each other. |
| 1:29.8 | I think even in long-distance friendships, you can plan a FaceTime. Like, hey, Saturday, 3 p.m., let's have a FaceTime. Great. I know what I'm doing. I'll be there. I'll be properly ready for it. And let's rock and roll. but to just blindly call me on FaceTime, I don't like it. |
| 1:44.2 | I don't like it at all. |
| 1:45.3 | So I highly recommend if you're me on FaceTime, I don't like it. |
| 1:44.2 | I don't like it at all. |
| 1:45.3 | So I highly recommend if you're going to FaceTime with your friends. |
| 1:49.1 | You plan it out. |
| 1:50.1 | Controversial, I know, very controversial, |
| 1:52.0 | but I like to know when and where rather than being caught off guard. |
