Hello and welcome to full disclosure. The first episode of a second series, no less.

And it is, as you know by now, a podcast project designed chiefly to let me spend a little bit more time than is ordinarily available with people I've always wanted to meet and or find out more about.

And I'm delighted to tell you that my first guest of the new series

is Tom Watson. And oddly, we haven't really met before. We passed once outside a studio corridor,

but given that we grew up on the same street in Kiderminster, it's remarkable that this is our

first proper meeting. Strangely, I feel I know you, though, James. Well, we both get that a bit.

I imagine.

We will begin at the beginning, but before we go to the beginning, let's go to the end.

I'm fascinated for many reasons to talk to you, but not least because you appear in your

sort of early 50s to have reached a point where all the things you thought you wanted to do

with the second half of your life,

you no longer want to do.

And you've almost had a rebirth.

You've almost had a second coming.
