Welcome to the Orvis Fly Fishing Guide podcast and lately we've had a lot of requests for a podcast on steelhead fishing.

It makes sense because this is the prime steelhead time a year.

So I certainly can't teach you how to catch Steelhead in a 10 to 15 minute podcast.

But what I can do is at least give you some pointers and tell you what to expect your first time out, Steelhead Fishing.

The most important thing in Steelhead Fishing is to remember something that my good friend

Charterboat Captain Tony Biski is always telling me is the secret to

striped bass fishing and that's go early and stay late. Steelhead fishing

you just have to put in your time. It's not high volume fishing. It's not like trout fishing where you might go out and catch 10 or 15 or even 20 fish a day.

Now there are streams, particularly some of the streams that run into Lake Erie that are high volume streams.

And you might conceivably hook 20 fish in a day of steelhead fishing.

But I really consider a good day of steelhead fishing. But I really consider a good day of steelhead fishing a day that I

may be hooked to and land one and a spectacular day would be to land three or four steelhead fishing in a day.

And believe me, I've gone many times and been skunked in many fantastic steelhead rivers.

So you really do have to put in your time and be patient.

And that's one of the most important things I could tell you about Steelhead fishing is to go early and stay late.

Steelhead are just large rainbow trout that have used either the Pacific Ocean or a very large inland lake to grow fat and then they return to the rivers that they were born and to

And so they're either sea run or lake run rainbows and they become quite silvery when they go out into these

big bodies of water and feed on shrimp or krill or crustaceans, other crustaceans or baitfish.
