I'm the host Scott Feinberg, and on this episode I am really thrilled to be joined

by one of the most multi-talented and yet understated guys you'll encounter in the film

industry, Tom McCarthy.

He's an actor, a writer, and a director. This year he co-wrote

with Josh Singer the movie Spotlight, which he also directed, and is now headed to the Academy

Awards as a Best Director and Best Original Screenplay Oscar Nominee.

It's only the fifth film that he's directed, but three of the four others are really good as well.

I'm talking about the Station agent, the Visitor, and win-win, which helped to make McCarthy one of the most revered members of the

indie community in the 21st century. Most people regard his fourth film, The Cobbler,

as a misfire, but even that's beginning to be re-evaluated by some. McCarthy's resume also

includes writing credits for Up. He was part of the team that received the best original screenplay Oscar nomination for that instant classic from Pixar, as well as Million Dollar Arm, very different sort of film. In terms of his on-screen work, ironically enough his best-known role is probably as a bad journalist on the terrific television show The Wire. He also acted in a film about journalism, fair game, as well as a series of other films for well-known directors,

such as Peter Jackson and The Lovely Bones, Clint Eastwood and Flags of our Fathers, and George Clooney in Good Night and Good

Luck. That's not to suggest he can't have fun as well.

as well as pixels, which he took a day off from the set of spotlight
