He's an actor, a writer, and a director. This year he co-wrote

as a misfire, but even that's beginning to be re-evaluated by some. McCarthy's resume also

In terms of his on-screen work, ironically enough his best-known role is probably as a bad journalist on the terrific television show The Wire.
