This is Skip Holland's worth at Texas Monthly. Obviously, I don't have to tell you that

there are still many questions to be answered about Tom Brown's mysterious disappearance

and death in the tiny Panhandle town of Canadian Texas. We still don't know for sure why Tom

vanished or why his backpack and phone were dumped on the side of remote Lake Marvin

Road north of town. And how did his remains end up a couple hundred yards from that same

road underneath a cottonwood tree? We just don't know. More than a year ago, I had been informed

that the district attorney was going to convene a grand jury and subpoena residents of Canadian,

including Tom's own mother, brother and stepfather, to find out what they really knew and what

they might be hiding. But the district attorney decided for reasons of his own not to call

a grand jury at all. Apparently, he decided he didn't have enough evidence to prove exactly what

did or did not happen to Tom after he disappeared in 2016. But private investigator Philip Klein,

who has been working for Tom's family, has just announced that he will be making a public presentation

in Canadian on October 20th. And he says he's going to lay out new details about the case.

I've had a few conversations with Klein over the last couple of months and he's given me some

clues about what he plans to say. As you probably remember from the podcast, he claims that close to

midnight on November 23rd 2016, after cruising with his friends, Tom was on his way home when he

saw two boys at the high school football field parking lot. Tom looked out there and saw some guys

hanging out. Hey, Tom's a guy. He drove up. Hey, guys, how's it going? And somebody snuck around

like a dumbass. Now who would that be? Snuck around with a little popcorn to try to scare him.

And he got popped in the head. He died. Oh my God. What are we going to do? We just killed the former
