I think we all know that Todd Downing is not really the person in charge of the Jets offense, but the changes he can make are changes he should make.

Let's talk about what should look different under Todd Downing for the Jets on offense today on Locked On Jets.

Welcome, this is the Locked on Jets podcast, part of the Lockdown Podcast Network, your team every day. It's Friday, October 11th, 2024, and I'm your host, John B, from gangreneation.com. Thank you so much making the show your first listen or first watch every day. Our episode today is brought to you by Fanduel. Each Wednesday we try and do a mailbag. We were supposed to do a mailbag this week on Wednesday, but the Jets had other plans. They fired their coach on Tuesday. So we push our mailback to Friday and lots of great listener questions today. I'll get to as many of them as I can. Thanks so much for sending in the questions. Couldn't do a mailbag without the question. So thank you so much.

Couldn't do a mailbag without the question. So thank you so much. Couldn't do it without you. Let's start. Our first question, hi, John. What realistically can the offense change in less than one week? Personally, I'd like to see more motion and some sort of screen game, not sure why screens weren't used against all the blitzes the last two weeks. However, how quickly can changes to an offense be implemented?

1:30.9

And of course, the Jets made a change. If you missed it yesterday, and we did a show on it,

1:35.6

Jeff Olberg announced that Nathaniel Hackett is no longer the play caller.

1:40.4

The play calling duties now go to Todd Downing.

1:42.8

Hackett keeps his title as offensive

1:44.4

coordinator, but that feels like it's just a, he's the offensive coordinator name only.

1:48.6

It sounds like Downing is taking control of the offense. Not a moment too soon. Hackett should

1:53.9

not have returned to 2024. He should never have been hired in the first place. The guy's just

1:58.2

a really, really lousy offensive coach. But the Hackett era seems to be over, even though he's still on the coaching staff.

2:05.2

It seems like he has a vastly reduced role. So what can Todd Downing change? And I think a lot of

2:10.6

listeners are not going to love the answer to this question. At the end of the day, as much as I

2:15.5

dislike Nathaniel Hackett, he was not the guy in charge of the offense, and neither will Todd Downing be the person who's in charge of the offense. Aaron Rogers is running the offense. There were reports this week that, you know, Hackett essentially was giving him three plays at the line of scrimmage, and Rogers scanned the defense pre-snap, and then he decided which of the three was best to use. And you see Rogers making checks at the line of scrimmage and Rogers scanned the defense pre-snap and then he decided which

2:34.3

of the three was best to use and you see Rogers making checks at the line of scrimmage. I mean, essentially this is what used to happen with Peyton Manning when he was with the Colts and the Broncos. A quarterback of this stature has an incredible amount of leeway at the line of scrimmage to change things. And it's one of the issues with Hackett is just like he brought nothing to the table you know essentially it was if Aaron Rogers you know one of the greatest

2:54.5

quarterbacks of the issues with Hackett is just like he brought nothing to the table. You know, essentially it was if Aaron Rogers, you know, one of the greatest quarterbacks of all time gets you into the right play, your offense looks great. Well, I mean, I could probably be an offensive coordinator in that situation. You know, what you want is you want to coach adding something to the table. Like, you know, Patrick Mahomes is the best quarterback in the NFL.

3:07.7

He's, you know, going to be a first ballot hall of fame or going to go down as probably

3:10.4

one of the five greatest quarterbacks who ever played the game. But Andy Reid's adding something, you know, Andy, it's not just they're throwing Mahomes out there and it's up to Mahomes to figure everything out. Andy Reid's putting him in good positions. Hackett never did that. I don't think Todd Downing is a great offensive mind.

3:24.1

I mean, if you talk to any Tennessee Titans fan,
