The Acme Corporation is a fictional corporation that is featured prominently in the

Roadrunner slash Wiley Coyote cartoons as a running gag.

The company manufactures outlandish products that fail or backfire at the worst possible times.

For those of you who don't speak ancient Greek, well, allow me to translate.

The word Acme comes from an ancient Greek word meaning the peak Zenith or prime.

Yet products from the fictional Acme Corporation are often failure-prone or explosive,

thus making the gag even funnier. You'll remember that Wiley Coyote would often

purchase mail-order products from the Acme Corporation in his attempt to catch

the ever elusive roadrunner.

One running gag involves the Coyote trying in vain to shield himself with a little

parousel against a great falling boulder that is about to crush him.

Another one that involves him falling from a high cliff after momentarily being suspended in midair,

as if the fall is delayed until he realizes that there is nothing below him.

The rest of the scene, shot from a bird's eye view, shows him falling into a canyon so deep that his figure is eventually lost to sight with only a small puff of dust indicating his impact.

The Coyote is notably a brilliant artist capable of quickly painting incredibly lifelike renderings of such things as tunnels and roadside scenes in further and equally futile attempts to deceive the bird. The Acme Corporation wasn't exclusive to the

Roadrunner Wiley Coyote cartoons. No sir, the name Acme could be seen in

three stuges shorts, some Walt Disney cartoons, and even in early episodes of

I Love Lucy and the Andy Griffith show. The Acme Corporation may not have been

exclusive to the Roadrunner Wiley Coyote cartoons, but neither was the coyote.

While Ethelbert Coyote, yes, E stands for Ethelbert, was also featured chasing after Bugs Bunny a time or five.

Differences, and the Bugs Bunny cartoons, he actually spoke.
