In this Talk of Champions: Short Session, Ben Garrett (OMSpirit.com/On3) is joined by Ole Miss basketball senior forward Jaemyn Brakefield. The Rebels tip off their season against Alabama State on Monday at 7 p.m. CT.

They’re looking to rebound after suffering through one of the worst seasons in program history a year ago. Brakefield, in his third Rebel season, believes in the group first-year head coach Chris Beard has assembled.

“100 percent,” he said. “You can feel it on and off the court. It’s a great group of guys. Ready to work.”

Brakefield, a one-time transfer from Duke, is on of four returning Rebels. The rest are either transfers or freshmen. 

Brakefield had a breakout season of sorts as a junior, averaging 11.1 points, 5.7 rebounds and 1.7 assists. He shot 53.7 percent from the field and 35.1 percent from three.

“He was so honest,” Brakefield said of Beard’s successful pitch to keep him at Ole Miss. “You could feel it in his heart. He came here for one reason, and that was to win. I haven’t won at Ole Miss since I’ve been here, and that’s something I know the city deserves and athletics in basketball here deserves. 

“I’m trying to change that culture, and I’m glad I’m a part of it.”
