Summary

Hey there, darlings welcome back to the Roots and Refuge Podcast. Today I’m sharing a slower, sweeter reflection on something that’s been on my heart lately, the joy of growing your own food. With the busyness of spring, harvests starting to roll in, and everything asking for our attention, it’s easy to rush past the wonder of it all. But I want to invite you to savor it. Whether you’ve grown one tomato or a whole pantry full of produce, there’s joy to be found in every bite—if we choose to see it.

Let’s focus on being present, celebrating the small victories, and remembering why we started this life in the first place.

If you’ve found encouragement here, consider supporting the podcast on Patreon, where you can listen early and join our monthly Q&A.

As always, I bless you until next time.

Hey there, darlands, welcome back to the Roots and Refuge podcast. I'm your host, Jessica Sauerz. My friends call me Jess, and I hope you will too. And here on my podcast, we talk about all things homesteading, growing food by raising animals, growing gardens, preserving, preparing, and enjoying that food,

0:21.5

as well as trying to live more mindfully in relationship with each other and with the earth.

0:26.8

I'm coming to you from my office today where it is currently 83 degrees Fahrenheit, 28 degrees Celsius.

0:34.0

That's warm for an inside temperature.

0:36.9

It's because the outside temperature is very hot,

0:38.4

my air conditioning is not working. I'm waiting on the repair guy to come, and I have just

0:42.3

been sweating it out this afternoon, getting my work done. Honestly, I've been doing a lot of

0:47.0

garden work outside in the heat, so it's not too terribly different. At least there's a fan going in

0:53.1

here. At least the sun's not

0:55.1

beating down on me. So it's at least something of an improvement comfort-wise to the last

1:00.9

handful of days of work. It is full swing garden season and it has meant a lot of hands-on, a lot of

1:09.9

sewing and maintaining pruning tomatoes and mulching and doing all of the things.

1:16.0

I am living for it.

1:17.4

I absolutely love being in the garden and I love when the harvest starts coming in, which it is.

1:24.0

I'm not harvesting just tons of stuff, but I have a good bit of variety.

1:28.9

At this point, we're thoroughly enough into the season to have had harvests come and go.

1:33.6

So we're done harvesting asparagus.

1:36.4

I'm to the trickling end of just handfuls of strawberries a day, whereas I was getting baskets full.

1:42.9

Right now, I'm getting blueberries. I got my first

1:45.9

blackberry today. It was quite bitter so we're not quite there yet. But the raspberries have been

1:50.4

on point. I've been really enjoying that. And when I left the house today, Maya was setting up the

1:57.9

drying racks for me to be able to pull out all of this year's onions.
