West Virginia's Attorney General filed a lawsuit against Apple today, alleging its

iCloud platform facilitates the storage and distribution of child sexual abuse material.

The complaint focuses on Apple's move to shelf plans for tools aimed at detecting and reporting

child sexual abuse material uploaded to iCloud.

The plans announced in 2021 were controversial. Privacy experts warned governments could abuse

a system by using it to conduct surveillance on iPhones. Federal law requires U.S. tech

companies to report detected child sexual abuse material to the National Center for Missing and

Exploited Children,

but Apple has long made fewer reports than other tech companies. In 2023, the company made 267 reports,

while Google filed about one and a half million, and META filed more than 30 million. Apple said in a statement that protecting the safety and privacy of its users, especially children, is key to its mission and pointed to its parental controls and communication safety features. News Corp, owner of the Wall Street Journal, has a commercial agreement to supply news through Apple services.
