President Trump today threatened to raise tariffs and impose export controls on China after Beijing

announced new restrictions on exports of rare earth minerals this week. Rare earths are critical

components of semiconductors, electric vehicles, and more. U.S. stocks fell sharply

in response to the threat of new tariffs, with the NASDAQ falling more than 2.8% by late afternoon.

Amazon shares fell about 4%. Many of the items for sale on Amazon come from third-party sellers

that source their products from Chinese factories.

Meanwhile, shares in European semiconductor companies declined as well.

Shares of Dutch chipmaking equipment supplier, ASML, and small arrival ASM International were down

more than 2%.

And shares of ST Microelectronics, whose clients include Tesla and Apple, fell nearly

four and a half percent. The European Union is examining children's online safety efforts by

YouTube, Apple, and Snapchat under the Block's content moderation law. The EU's executive arm,

the European Commission, has asked for information on the company's

age verification systems and on how they prevent minors from seeing harmful material. YouTube

parent Google said it's worked with experts to build age-appropriate experiences.

A Snapchat spokesperson said they'll provide the necessary information to the commission,

and Apple didn't immediately

respond to a request for comment. And in the UK, the nation's competition enforcer has named

Google as a company it needs to keep an eye on under its new competition law due to the company's
