Summary

The downfall and disgrace of Prince Andrew has taken another dramatic turn after he announced he was giving up some of his royal titles.

Reports have emerged that Andrew asked his personal protection officer to help with a smear campaign against Virginia Giuffre years before she filed a civil lawsuit accusing him of sexual assault. The prince continues to deny any wrongdoing.

What role did the King and other members of the Royal Family play in Andrew's decision to give up his titles? Why is this happening now and does the move go far enough? And could this lead to calls for a rethink over the future of the monarchy?

Niall is joined by Sky's royal correspondent Rhiannon Mills for the latest on the long-running scandal.

Producer: Tom Gillespie
Editor: Mike Bovill

Prince Andrew yet again. Why? Well, he released a statement late last Friday, in which he said he was

relinquishing his titles, including him being the Duke of York. That alone would be enough to

the woman who alleges she was forced to have sex with Andrew, along with his friend Jeffrey Epstein.

The prince vigorously denies all allegations.

We know that Virginia was paid £12 million to settle her civil case in the United States.

She sadly took her life back in April, but this week her memoirs are

0:56.0

being published posthumously, and no doubt there will be fresh detail and accusations. In short,

1:02.8

if the palace thought they had put this one to rest, they were much mistaken. In fact, those

1:07.9

already critical of the monarchy see this as another reason to renew their opposition to the royal family.

1:13.6

Here's Graham Smith from the anti-monarchy group, Republic.

1:17.0

The whole problem here is the royal family have built up this lines of defence, of secrecy, of deference,

1:24.1

of, you know, sort of people getting very upset if you even suggest anything offensive

1:29.5

about them and at the end of the day these are just very ordinary people in a weird situation

1:34.2

which is allow them to think that they can behave with impunity and get away with anything

1:38.5

and it's time that we strip away all the nonsense about titles and royalty and blue blood

1:43.3

and all the rest of the nonsense.
