We've been reporting for much of this week on a surge in migration at the southern US border ahead of the end of the pandemic era immigration policy known as Title 42.

That policy will be lifted at 1159 Eastern time tonight ahead of that deadline thousands of migrants have made their way to the border city of El Paso, Texas.

And US officials are bracing for thousands more migrants to attempt the crossing in the coming days and weeks.

But what about on the other side of the border joining me now from Mexico City is our deputy editor for Latin America Santiago Perez.

Santiago, what's been happening on the ground in Mexico in the past week or so?

Hi Ann Marie, what we're seeing is that migrants, migrants seem to be anticipating the change in rules.

So that means that a lot of migrants are arriving in these border towns like Tijuana, Ciudad Juarez, Pedro Aznera, Rhinosa, and Matamoros, and tried to cross before Title 42 expires at midnight.

We've talked to migrant workers who don't expect a significant increase after the deadline.

But those are expectations. So it's really complicated to predict what's going to happen.
