If you've been thinking about buying or selling a home recently, you know that it's not an easy prospect. The U.S. housing markets facing a range of challenges from low inventory and stubbornly high prices in many markets to soaring interest rates and stricter underwriting standards that make it tougher to qualify for a mortgage.

This confluence of factors has made affordable housing rather scarce. A redfin

report released earlier this month found that just one in five homes was affordable to the average

household last year. That's roughly half the number of affordable homes from the previous year

and the lowest percentage on record. A listing is considered affordable if the monthly mortgage

payment is less than

one-third of the county's median income. Well, now some enterprising businesses are working on

solutions to this affordable housing crisis in the form of kits to tiny homes, and they cost less

than $50,000. Jamaica Cottage Shop is one of those companies. ZD. Net named its Vermont cabin model its top pick in the category.

Fully assembled, the kit yields a 600 square foot home with an equal amount of lost space.
