The story of the Flag Grove School starts with Benjamin Flag.

He was born into slavery in 1856 in North Carolina.

After emancipation, he saved some money and took his family west.

In Tennessee, he was able to buy some land, and then he got some more.

By 1898, he was one of few wealthy black landowners, but with his wealth from all his land,
