Welcome back to the OnScript podcast. This is Matt Lynch coming to you from

Regent College in Vancouver. In this episode, I'm speaking with Dr. Timothy Beale about his book when

time is short, finding our way in Anthropocene. And in it, he talks about this concept of the

Anthropocene. We don't really define it in the interview.

So I just wanted to quickly sketch what it means.

So we usually talk about the Earth in terms of geologic time.

So those are going to be time periods that span a very long period of time. And most geologists would say

that we're currently in the Holocene era and have been for the past 12,000 years since the

end of the last major ice age. So you can see how like that denotes a shift in the geological

landscape as we come out of that ice age and

into a new era. But increasingly in the past like five to 10 years, people have talked

about the current era as not the Holocene but the Anthropocene. In other words, humans have

had the most significant impact on

the state of the planet. And that's found primarily through climate change. And so that's what's

denoted by Anthropocene. It's a way of speaking about this current time when humans have had the most significant impact on the Earth's geology and ecosystems and whatnot.
