I've been invited to speak on a very difficult subject.

It's difficult for two reasons.

One is because of the subject.

The other is because I've been asked to speak specifically on the Jewish tradition.

The reason that is so difficult is because there are many Jewish

traditions on almost every subject. And so I hasten to add at the outset the intellectual, religious

honesty demands that I say that it is impossible to represent all Jews on anything except that

H2O makes water. And even on that, there are some rabbinic differences.

So it is important that that be established at the outset.

However, if you are to invite a religious Jew, which I am,

I'm about as normative a religious Jew as you can find.
