the worst result that comes out of complex trauma is how it changes your self-identity.

Can you just pull that apart and maybe give the listener some insight into that?

Can I back up and come kind of wide-angle lens first and then zero in on that?

Let me just start by talking about what is complex trauma

because I think there's a lot of misunderstandings around that.

And what typically happens is we start with kind of a basic

understanding of something and it grows, the more we research it,

but a lot of people still stay fixated

on that initial understanding.

And so the original understanding of trauma

was what we now call big T trauma,

some horrific event that happened,

that was out of the normal,

that put a person beyond their ability to cope, so they were overwhelmed.

And so their only response was fight, flight, or freeze.

And so Big T trauma, that horrific event stuff became kind of the focus.
