Summary

This week on the Pinkbike podcast, we dive into the season's first World Cup in South Korea, where loose, sandy soil and questionable track builds created a "recipe for disaster." The drama peaked when a dangerous feature was closed mid-race after Lou Ferguson’s crash, leading to confusion from off-site commentators. We also witnessed the bizarre saga of "Hardtail Man," a Polish rider on a dual-crown-equipped hardtail rig whose retro vibes turned into a safety hazard when elite riders nearly caught him during his run. The racing itself confirmed a massive "changing of the guard" as the new generation officially took over. Asa Vermette lived up to the hype with a clinical win, while Amaury Pierron proved he’s back in "Terminator" mode by crashing yet still clawing his way to an incredible third-place finish. Between the Alran twins’ calm "aura" and the Junior Women posting elite-level times, the depth of the field is reaching a fever pitch. Technically, the pits were buzzing over radical "trophy truck" bike setups and the legitimate podium success of belt-drive bikes. Looking ahead to Loudenvielle, it’s clear the veterans are under heavy fire. Whether it's the raw speed of the Juniors or the return of a healthy Pierron, the "old guard" will have to find another gear to stay on the podium this season.

Hello and welcome to another Pink Bike podcast. My name is Stefan, and we're joined by our very special Big Bad Wolf, Dan Wolf, Dario, Di Giulio, Matt Beer. We got a full crew. Cazza's in China. So we're just, it's just the boys again. And yeah, Korea. First World Cup of the season happened in Korea. Dan was there. How was it, Dan?

0:23.1

Amazing. I mean, it depends on who you talk to, but I thought it was absolutely great. I had a great time, but I did joke about that going there saying that it was probably going to be amazing for me regardless of if the track was good or bad, because I was just going to cover what happened anyway.

0:40.5

I feel like Korea seems like such a cool country to begin with.

0:44.7

Like I'm so curious about going there and, you know, like I bet the food's great.

0:49.2

I've heard the city of Seoul is so futuristic almost, like technologically so uh it would just be a cool

0:57.4

place to go but then it looked like they had a totally awesome world cup actually um yeah how was uh

1:06.5

i know there was a lot of dramas around the track or it kind of at first there was some

1:12.2

question marks about it and there was maybe some changes made. How did the track look when you

1:16.0

showed up? Yeah, that's probably best place to start with is like track walk, you know?

1:22.1

Even back before track walk I saw a video of Frank Pardell, who I believe was quite involved in the build of the track.

1:30.4

I saw him hitting the feature that ended up taking out Lou Ferguson.

1:34.6

And like straight away, I was like, that doesn't work.

1:37.5

That was that long.

1:38.3

Yeah, I'm in the open.

1:39.5

It was so sketchy.

1:40.9

Yeah.

1:41.3

Yeah.

1:42.2

And it just the way it worked was like you did this kind of kicky step up out into the open. And then when you landed, they could have given you more room to set up far right and then turn in. But it was kind of like a bit of a 90 degrees corner with no camber on the inside. So you're notting really to

2:02.1

lean into. And then the area itself has a really kind of sandy soil in a lot of places. And in that

2:11.1

area it was like quite loose. And if you mix those things together, you've got a recipe for disaster.

2:20.6

So anyway, yeah, going to trackwalk straight away, I was like, this track's going to get destroyed,

2:25.6

but in some places it needed to get destroyed, so riders actually had something to write into.
