Summary
Featuring: - Speaking the truth in love - Applying Scripture to the need of the moment - Comforting the suffering and calling sinners to repentance - Working to make them mature as they abide in Jesus Christ. What is the Method of Biblical Counseling? . . . speaking the truth in love and applying Scripture to the need of the moment by comforting the suffering and calling sinners to repentance thus working to make them mature as they abide in Jesus Christ. Definition of Biblical Counseling Biblical counseling is the personal discipleship ministry of God’s people to others under the oversight of God’s church, dependent upon the authority and sufficiency of God’s Word through the work of the Holy Spirit. Biblical counseling seeks to reorient disordered desires, affections, and behaviors toward a God-designed anthropology in an effort to restore true worship of God and right fellowship with others. This is accomplished by speaking the truth in love and applying Scripture to the need of the moment by comforting the suffering and calling sinners to repentance thus working to make them mature as they abide in Jesus Christ. | 0:00.0 | The Method of Biblical Counseling on this edition of Truth and Love. |
| 0:11.6 | I'm Dale Johnson, and you're listening to Truth and Love, a podcast of the Association of Certified Biblical Counselors, |
| 0:17.9 | where we seek to provide biblical solutions for the problems that people face. |
| 0:22.9 | This week on the podcast, we are continuing to discuss the definition of biblical counseling. |
| 0:30.2 | We have broken the definition up into three portions. Dr. Sam Stevens is here with me, |
| 0:36.4 | our director of Training Center certification, and we are discussing |
| 0:39.8 | this idea of definition of biblical counseling. And we do this just to simply attempt to make clarity. |
| 0:46.5 | And again, we're not perfect. I'm actually a little disappointed, Sam, that our definition is |
| 0:51.8 | a lot longer so we can have this discussion for more weeks because |
| 0:55.0 | this has been quite fun. But we get to the third section where we try to describe the method. |
| 1:02.4 | Okay, what does this look like? Often we are critiqued in the biblical counseling world from those |
| 1:08.0 | who are in the integrationist world or even the secular world to say that biblical counseling really doesn't have a methodology the Bible doesn't explain |
| 1:14.9 | what we should do in a counseling setting you know I think that's an unfortunate |
| 1:19.4 | perspective and we try to address that in simple terms here I'm actually working right now |
| 1:26.5 | on fleshing that out in more of a full-length |
| 1:28.6 | book that I hope to release sometime next year. And when we think about this idea of the goal |
| 1:35.7 | and what we're aiming at, there has to be a means by which we do it. When we say the Bible is |
| 1:41.0 | sufficient, we would argue that the Bible does have methodology. |
| 1:50.5 | The reason that we get critiqued on this often, I think, has to do with the lens by which we're seeing. We think that the methodology that has been given to us by secularists in their terms of techniques and methodology and approaches is the same sort of way that that has to be dealt with |
| 2:04.5 | in the scriptures. And I would argue that that sort of gets the cart before the horse. Our experiences |
| 2:09.9 | should not be compiled into a system that we superimpose onto the Bible. Actually, what should |
| 2:16.8 | happen is we look at the scripture for methodology and for understanding |
