We're now 19 months into the pandemic, and we have officially reached a gruesome milestone.

One in 500 Americans has died of COVID.

And still, we have people acting like wearing a mask is their own personal health cost.

We have yet another damning story about Facebook today, with the Wall Street Journal

breaking the story that Facebook is aware from its own research, that Instagram has a toxic

effect on teenagers' mental health, yet has done nothing about it and has played it down in public.

Facebook has apparently been conducting research for the past three years into how Instagram

affects teenage users, and results are showing that Instagram is harmful for a sizable percentage

of them, most notably teenage girls. Instagram makes body issues worse for one in three teen girls,

and among teens who have reported suicidal thoughts, 13% of British users and 6% of American

users trace the desire to kill themselves to Instagram. They also came to the conclusion that

this problem is specific to Instagram, and not necessarily social media more broadly.

Meanwhile, Facebook has consistently played down the apps negative effects on teens,

and hasn't made its research public or available to academics or lawmakers who have asked for it.
