Tesla might have some trouble coming its way, courtesy of the United States Justice Department.

The Justice Department has opened up a criminal investigation to look into some of the contradictory messaging from Tesla and its CEO Elon Musk regarding the autopilot feature on their cars.

At the core of the probe is the fact that in some videos on their website and in statements from Elon Musk, Tesla seems to suggest that the driver isn't really necessary when a car has autopilot activated.

Even the name autopilot makes it seem like the car can drive on its own.

And this month, Tesla launched its full self-driving beta program, which again, gives the

impression that the cars can drive themselves.

However, when you dive deeper on the car company's website or in its owner's manual,

they're pretty clear that autopilot is there to assist the driver not take over entirely. And that conflicting messaging

is what the Justice Department will be looking into in order to decide if Tesla could be at fault

for deaths that occurred in accidents where Tesla's autopilot feature was being misused.

Earlier in the week, I told you about a shooting that happened at a high school in St. Louis, Missouri.
