| 0:14.1 | We are now at January the 6th of the year 2022 and that means the one year anniversary of what happened |
| 0:20.8 | in Washington, D.C. most specifically at the United States Capitol on January the 6th, |
| 0:26.3 | 2021. In one sense, it seems like a lot more than a year ago, but this is still very much an issue that rightly has an ongoing part in America's |
| 0:35.5 | conversation and criminal investigations and prosecutions are still ongoing, and it is still |
| 0:41.5 | difficult for Americans to agree on a consensus as to what these |
| 0:45.4 | events mean. That's a part of the background of the partisan conflict in the |
| 0:50.1 | United States. That's a part of the background in the worldview conflict that we now face. |
| 0:55.0 | But we do need to look squarely at the events of January the 6th, 2021 and come to understand |
| 1:01.6 | what happened then and what it means now as best we can as Christians. |
| 1:06.4 | The events that took place a year ago today were of a scale that demand our attention and |
| 1:11.1 | also our urgent concern. The meaning of the events is now part of the |
| 1:15.1 | maelstrom of partisan division in the United States and that division is |
| 1:19.1 | fueled by both the media and the political class. Even as you talk to your neighbors right now or your friends or have a random conversation, |
| 1:26.0 | even the briefest of conversations about January 6, 2021, |
| 1:31.0 | reveals that when it comes to these events there are several different |
| 1:34.4 | Americas just think of three in the first America the events of January the six |
| 1:39.8 | represent nothing less than an attempted coup against the lawful government of the United States. |
| 1:45.0 | You still hear this language, insurrection and coup. |
| 1:48.4 | And the insurrection it was claimed to threaten to topple over two centuries of constitutional government. |
