The Supreme Court has agreed to take up a case deciding the constitutionality of the law

that would ban TikTok if it is not relieved of its Chinese ownership by January 19.

This is the result of a case brought by TikTok the company as well as a group of eight content

creators, though the ban was upheld

by an appeals court earlier this month. The company and the group of content creators,

with support from the ACLU, are arguing that the ban stifles First Amendment rights to free speech,

while the appeals court concluded that the government has a valid and lawful basis for passing

the law. The federal government had cited intelligence

that the Chinese-owned app could be used to spread Chinese propaganda and surveil Americans.

To be clear, though, the ban does not make it illegal to use the app just for it to be available

in the app's stores.
