And it's changed in a way that is unprecedented.

Even in 1968, when then President Linden Johnson withdrew from the race, he did so before the primary season and gave his party the opportunity to have a real contest in terms of who would succeed him as the Democratic nominee in 1968.

That turned out, ironically enough to be his own Vice President Hubert Humphrey, but Humphrey had

He wasn't just designated with it. As a matter of fact, back in 1968, in a way that many people considered disloyal, then President Lyndon Johnson in withdrawing from the race did not even indicate he was giving his support to his own vice president.
