Summary

This week I'm talking with Athena Aktipis about the gradients of apocalyptic events and how humans cope with the end times.

Athena is an Associate Professor in the Department of Psychology at Arizona State University and co-Director of The Cooperation Science Network and The Human Generosity Project.

This episode is a part of a new series we're working on where we present ideas from scientists in a more structured format. We're still fine-tuning the way this will work, so make sure and join the brainstorm over on my Discord.

Welcome to the show everybody. This is a special new episode. It's a part of what will be a new series eventually. It's just here we are for now, but in addition to recording these as here we are episodes. It's a new project that I'm putting together that I'm very excited about basically I've been reaching out to some of my favorite past guests of here we are.

This idea came about from helping some of my some of my science friends with various projects at different stages of development and I started reaching out to people be like hey if you have a new class you're trying to put together a new book that you're putting together and you know you're maybe stuck in a part or you're in the brainstorming phase you kind of have the outline together and you know the direction of it.

But you want to know what's what how it's going to be received by the public and and what questions and comments they might have and things like that why don't we hash it out in this conversational way just not not not unlike a regular here we are episode but but in a in a structured series over time.

1:15.0

How it's going to work is each month there's my this is the first experiment of it is a great fun intro so every month my first guest Athena and I'm working on this with with a couple other past guests as well so this is this is the very first one so it's especially important that that you guys get involved in giving me ideas and and notes and anything that you like anything you'd like to see any ideas of your own that you have any

1:44.8

questions anything like that the idea is once a month we'll put out one of these Athena activists happens to be writing new book that I'm super excited about and so this is a

1:57.8

process of kind of casually going through what the book is about in a conversational way and to kind of brainstorm and come up with ideas and so this is an

2:09.6

intro and then there'll be three or four parts like the book will have you know we might focus in on one chapter or something in particular if there's

2:19.8

something that she wants some you know some extra notes on or just wants to talk through a little bit more and then and then there'll be kind

2:28.9

of a ending conclusion tying up loose ends and and a summary and answering remaining questions and addressing

2:39.6

comments and things like that and then and then it'll be like kind of reedited and rebranded so it's just

2:46.7

one thing in a package that you can get all five or six of those in kind of one playlist it's exciting

2:55.6

for me I started here we are eight years ago or whatever when podcasting was new I've learned a lot since then

3:03.1

sometimes I think about kind of ditching this show entirely and rebranding it just because I've learned more about

3:10.7

marketing and things that as as this show like you know is slow to grow now eight years in a lot of it's like well here we

3:24.4

are is maybe not the best name in the world to capture brand new people that doesn't even know there's nothing

3:31.8

with in that name that says that there's a comedian interviewing scientist or that it's a science podcast or

3:39.4

anything like that I like the name and it's meaningful to me or if you hear the theme song and everything but in terms of

3:47.8

capturing a wider audience there's just a lot of things like that that I've been kind of looking for a

3:54.2

way to do a fresh start but I also love this show and I love here we are and I love the education that I

4:00.1

get from doing it so I've been rather stubborn about about giving it up and and by the way thank you

4:12.6

anyone who supports me on patreon.com slash Shane Moss you're the only reason why this still exists

4:19.8

and it barely still exists I go out of pocket on this show and so if you want to help support
