Michael Cohen, President Trump's former lawyer, was sentenced Wednesday to three years in prison

for financial crimes and for lying to Congress. In rendering the sentence, Judge William H. Pauley

said Cohen's crimes, among them tax evasion and campaign finance violations, were, quote,

motivated by personal greed and ambition.

Our democratic institutions, the judge said, depend upon the honesty of our citizenry in

dealing with the government. Cohen, who had pled guilty to the charges, offered this,

quote, my own weakness and blind loyalty led me to a path of darkness.

I listened to him, meaning Trump, rather than to my own voice.

He has called me weak, and he is correct.

Time and time again, I thought my duty was to cover up his deeds.

I did not have the strength.

I'm sorry, I admit my guilt.

I have chosen another path.

The case has implications for Trump himself, as Judge Pauley noted that Cohen's campaign

finance crimes were designed to affect the outcome of the 2016 election.
