Welcome to the Double X Gap Fest for Thursday, October 30th, the Three Sexy Witches Edition.

1:31.7

I'm Hannah Rosen, a writer for Double X at Slate, speaking to you from the DC studio, and I'm joined in New York by June Thomas, editor of Outward Slate's LGBT blog. Hi, June. Hey, Hannah, you're getting really good at saying LGBT. I know. I'm saying it so fast. I'm saying it like a song now, LGBTQ. It's because I've been watching trans, which I love so much. Transparent? Transparent. Sorry, transparent. I call it trans, for short, in my head. But I love that show. So anyway, I'm all LGBTQ this week. And hi, Noreen. We didn't forget about you, Noreen Malone, of New York Magazine. Hi. Hi, Hannah. So it's our Halloween edition. I have a question, actually. I'm sure you all have your sexy witch costumes all in the closet and ready to go, right?

1:33.4

No.

1:38.3

I was just thinking about how I might be a witch for Halloween because I don't have a costume.

1:39.2

It's so easy.

1:41.2

It's just like black dress, you know.

1:42.0

Pointy hat.

1:42.9

Yeah, exactly.

Well, this is my question. If you are neither a teenager nor have children, what is Halloween for you? It's just a party? Like, you go to a dress-up party? Is that what happens? Well, see, I'm beyond the age where it's even a party. It's just like a lot of noise on the street downstairs. But no, it's nothing, really. It's just like it's hard to get home if you go out because there's all these kids on the street, but it's nothing to me. Also, because I grew up in a country where it really wasn't anything, so I didn't have any history of dressing up or anything. Yeah, it's just like another Tuesday. You don't really care about Halloween. This year, another Friday. Well, this is a Friday. When it it was last year, it was in the middle of the

week and I just kind of completely ignored it. But this year, I'm, I have to dress up because I'm going to a party. And it's going to be great. I'm so excited. What about you, hon? I mean, you have kids. So maybe are you still in like? Yeah. No, for me, it's obvious what it is. It's totally fun. Like there's this parade and that parade and they all love their costumes and it's obvious what it is it's totally fun like there's this parade and that

2:35.4

parade and they all love their costumes and it's really cute and you see them walking around

2:39.0

you throw candy at them and then they eat a lot of candy they freak out you yell at them

2:43.2

they eat too much candy or they's not you know it's all got a routine and when I was a teenager

2:47.7

it had a routine but I just couldn't remember what I did for Halloween when I was, you know, between, you know, in my 20s, 30s mode.
