Summary

Lent is a time of paring down—a time spent in the desert, if you will—as exemplified by Jesus’ forty days of fasting in these arid, barren lands. He was tempted three times by Satan, and rejected each attempt, giving glory to God at every turn. This is the lesson for us: that we make God the center of our lives and not test him. We are here to do his will, which is clarified through our own Lenten sacrifices.

asceticism. We notice now in Luke's account of

1:00.8

the temptation that the Spirit Himself led Jesus into the desert. That's some

some wicked power that leads him there. It's the Holy Spirit of God that leads

1:15.6

him into the desert. So as we begin Lent our desert time think of that. It's

1:20.9

the Spirit that leads you into this holy place. Notice please in so many of the

1:28.8

great figures of salvation history. Think of Abraham, Jacob, Joseph, Moses, Isaiah,

1:34.7

Jeremiah, David. It goes on and on. A period of testing or trial is required

1:42.6

before they can commence their work. Watch that pattern throughout the Bible. Now

1:49.6

you see the same thing in the initiation rituals of primal peoples. Before a young

1:55.4

man is ready to undertake his life's work he has to go through a period of

2:00.5

testing and trial. See the same thing in modern cinematic form in Star Wars. Luke

2:07.6

Skywalker has to go through his own initiation. The desert represents a stripping

2:17.4

away. Listen now. So that the fundamental things might appear. That's the desert.
