Summary

This week: Dr. Bruce Geryk, Sommelier of the Somme, guides Rob through several unconventional takes on WWI combat. World War I poses a serious challenge to the game designer, but Bruce takes us through several examples of how to do it right. Get ready for talks about "historicity", which should not be confused with the classic Police album, "Synchronicity". Some say it's their greatest album, but I'm more partial to Ghost in the Machine, myself. Anyway, let's talk about Paths of Glory, The Lamps are Going Out, and Fields of Despair.

Complit.

Based on my request that we finally make time to play Ted Racer's Pads of Glory, which Bruce supported me on, Bruce was like, by all means, let's play Paths of Glory.

1:01.5

But let's not just play Paths of Glory.

1:06.2

Bruce, you want to take us through a little bit what the overall syllabus was here?

1:10.2

I've got the names of the designers

here. Sure. Well, I can go through them. No, I know him. So we played PASI Glory. That's Ted Racer's

game with Charles S. Roberts' award-winning game from 1998. That sort of set us on our current,

1:25.4

well, I don't know about current, but it, it, it, it demonstrated

1:30.5

for a lot of people just how transformative card-driven designs could be, because I know that

1:38.3

Mark Herman's car-driven, we the People, had sort of set the stage,

1:46.3

but Ted Racer really refined it and took it to a completely different level,

1:51.8

and wargaming has really never been the same sense.

1:55.4

And it was fascinating, I think, to gamers at the time,
