Summary

The Winter of Wargaming is upon us once again, and to kick things off we look at a different kind of wargaming - the first person shooter. Battlefield 1 tackled the often-neglected first-person arena of World War 1, and to everyone's surprise it turned to be a damn fine game. Several other recent releases have also featured the grim realities of WW1 so Rob, Fraser, and guest Evan Lahti go through them this week to discuss whether historical accuracy is something we need or even want in a WW1 game.

Joining me today, we have freelance Reiner, Fraser Brown. Hello. And we're also joined by our

0:08.9

friend, PC gamers, Evan Lottie. Hey there. So as we get into the annual winter of wargaming

0:17.4

here at 3MA, I want to take a quick detour into shooters once again,

0:22.5

which I'm not sure we've really covered since Evan was on the show to talk about Red Orchestra

0:27.9

2 Rising Storm. Being completely honest here, the reason this is coming back up is there was

0:34.2

simply like no way in hell that we did that a world war one shooter

0:39.0

like battlefield one uh was not going to make it on to this show uh you know it's it's the war i

0:44.9

probably am most interested in and also like there were a lot of early comparisons uh to bad company

0:50.5

too uh when battlefield one came out so i've been really excited to try this game out and also, you know, to talk about it with

0:58.0

people.

1:00.0

But I think what intrigued me the most about Battlefield 1, even when I first heard about

1:05.6

it, is that World War I always seemed like kind of impossible territory for a shooter to really

1:12.4

succeed in. And I think that's, you know, to start out, like, I think it's probably just the

1:18.4

idea we have about these conflicts, right? Like, the Call of Duty and Medal of Honor Games,

1:23.0

you know, they kind of brought this whole genre into being, at least in its present form.

1:29.5

And I think they were kind of all inspired by World War II.

1:32.6

They were kind of inspired by World War II movies.

1:34.6

No, in many cases, they were like shot for shot ripping off World War II movies.

1:39.7

And like these visions of like individual heroism that you find in a lot of those movies, right?

1:45.4

Like, despite the fact that, like, World War II was an awful, like, terribly bloody war,

1:51.0

it doesn't have this, it has a better reputation, I guess, than World War I.
