Summary

Bruce, Troy, and Rob discuss Take Command: 2nd Manassas and why it is one of the best tactical Civil War games ever made. Along the way they discuss what they want from wargames, mission structure, and how few games really address the real challenges of battlefield command. The group lapse into a Tim Stone-induced reverie as they discuss games that have dealt with command and control from the perspective of a Napoleon or Lee. Apologies for sound quality issues: Rob’s microphone was having a disastrous day.

Good evening, you are listening to Three Moves Ahead, and I'm your host, Rob Zakene. With me tonight is one of my regular panel, Troy Goodfellow. Troy, welcome to the show. Only one of your regular panel? Bruce is an elite regular unit. Oh, he's an elite irregular unit. I had no idea. But yes, it's good to be here for two weeks in a row. It doesn't happen all that often anymore. It's really unusual.

And, of course, well, we kind of let the cat out of the bed.

keep me off for doing that but you didn't kick tom off for his uh freaking coffee thing so i

0:44.9

figure it doesn't get any worse than that the reason uh is our topic for today comes from the fact

0:51.1

that it's uh about the 150th anniversary of the Second Battle of Bull Run.

0:57.3

And one of the things I kind of want to do during, you know, throughout, as major Civil War

1:02.5

milestones come and go, I kind of want to revisit some of the best games in the Civil War genre.

1:08.1

And Take Command Second Manassas is easily the best, and actually I think one of the few

1:15.2

games to cover the Second Battle of Bull Run. And if you haven't played Take Command before,

1:21.5

in many ways, it's a, I would say, a more serious Sid Meyers-Gettysburg. And it does some very, it has some very interesting things to say about sort of the nature

1:31.7

of command in this period.

1:33.5

So I kind of wanted to start off, you know, throw it open to you guys, you know, sort

1:41.1

of share some favorite memories of this game and sort of how the Take a Man

1:46.4

series evolved on what we saw in Sid Meyers Gettysburg. I mean, I, the Takey Man series is kind of

1:54.5

has a pretty strong memory for me because my first game developers conference, the Mad Minute guys were

2:02.7

at the indie booth and they were presenting the first Take Command game and the first I'd ever

2:07.3

heard of this game and this game had come out of pretty much nowhere. And they were showing off
