Summary

Freelance writers Andrew Groen and Charlie Hall join Rob for a conversation about King Arthur 2: The Role-Playing Wargame. Everyone digs the setting, but opinions begin to diverge about the quality of the battles, and whether KA2's elements even hang together in a way that makes sense. Rob and Andrew can barely remember losing a battle, but Charlie creates his own challenges by trying to win cleanly. Is King Arthur 2 actually a good game, and is there hope for Neocore to finally get this formula right?

Good evening, you are listening to Three Moves Had, and I'm your host, Rob Zakeney.

Tonight, we're going to take you on a special trip back to old Camelot to discuss King Arthur II, the role-playing war game. It helped me do that tonight. We have my friend, Gamer's with Jobs, Charlie Hall. Charlie, welcome to the show. Thanks, Rob. How you doing? Not bad. I am, oh God, you know, I'm probably irresponsibly wasted, to be entirely honest.

That's always a good way to host.

0:27.2

I appreciate that in my hosts.

Wrapped up a couple stressful weeks, and, you know, the best way of handling stressful weeks, in my experience, is to order a lot of delivery food and get fat and then you go on a diet

0:39.0

and then you say damn i've been dieting all day i'm going to have two martinis and then you're just

destroyed so word of word of warning everyone that's a little hazard to getting healthy is being

inappropriately drunk during podcasts we're also joined by freelance writer Andrew Gruen.

Andrew, welcome to the show.

0:58.5

I'm glad to be here, Rob.

1:00.9

I've spent the last week working on a review of King Arthur II, the role-playing war game.

1:06.4

You know, it's very similar to Total War.

1:08.3

It's not quite a Total War clone, but is definitely sort of inspired

1:11.4

by Total War. It's a Total War style game from Neocor, published by Paradox. And, you know, I'll lay my

1:20.0

cards here on the table. When I was thinking of the show, I was, you know, I was more interested in this

1:25.0

as an example of seriously flawed or failed game design.

1:28.8

But what caught my own on Twitter is that both of you seem to be really digging the game.

1:33.3

And actually, a lot of my friends are having the same experience.

1:36.3

So I wanted to start with you, Andrew, because you seem the most effusive on Twitter, at least.

1:43.3

You know, you were arguing that more people should be talking about this game, paying attention to what's going on here. So I'm curious, what are your impressions of King Arthur, too? Can you explain it a little bit for us? And why has it got your attention? Sure. I mean, really why it has my attention is because it's not that I necessarily think it's a really well-executed game,

2:02.9

it's that I think it's a really interesting game. And, you know, maybe it's not so interesting because it's the sequel to King Arthur won, and that's basically a lot of the same ideas. But there's really not a lot else out there that's like this. When you talk about Total War or something like that,

2:16.1

you can get other games that are really hardcore strategy games that are like this.
