Summary

Troy and Rob are over the moon about Longbow's Hegemony: Philip of Macedon, and invite programmer and writer Rick Yorgason to the show so they can ask that timeless question: "How awesome is your game?" The three go into detail on the game's simplicity, its superb camera controls and artwork, its integrated and effective tutorial, and the compromises and adjustments Longbow made to the design along the way. Then Rick says there are two copies of the game available to loyal 3MA listeners, and Troy promises to award them randomly to two people who leave comments on this episode. Deadline for comments is Wednesday, July 20th.

With me tonight, once again, is our founding father, Troy Goodfellow. Troy, welcome back to the show. Glad to be here, Rod. How are you doing? Not bad. Hanging in there by thread, but my good pal old-fashioned is going to help me get through today. Yeah, I just have a Coke here, because I'm in doctor's orders to avoid the booze. Oh man, that sucks.

0:22.4

You have no idea.

0:23.9

Yeah, it just have a Coke here, because I'm in doctor's orders to avoid the booze. Oh, man, that sucks. You have no idea. Yeah, it sounds pretty terrible. I was wondering why you're so discombobulated, but that explains it. Well, there are a number of reasons to be discombobulated. The lack of a gin and tonic right now is one of them. Also with us tonight from Longbow Games, we have programmer and designer Rick Jorgison. Rick, welcome to the show.

Hi everyone.

So Rick is here to talk with us a bit about Hegemony, Philip Massadon, and the gold edition of the game.

0:46.3

This is something that Troy, you know, clued me into some time ago, but I haven't had a chance to play it until recently,

0:55.2

and I didn't feel comfortable doing a show on it until I'd been able to spend some time with it.

0:59.3

I don't know what took me so long, because this is one of my favorite periods in history,

1:03.6

and I have to say my initial impressions of hegemony are incredibly positive.

1:08.7

They really capture a lot of things I love about the period so Rick before we before we get into the game itself I'd love to hear a

1:16.0

bit about the or the origins of this game what where the how does this project

1:20.9

come about yeah okay so the original the original game was obviously about

1:26.2

Philip and Macedon who was the father of Alexander the Great,

1:29.3

who kind of created the army and everything that Alexander later used to conquer half the known world at the time.

1:36.3

But Philip wasn't ever really anywhere near as well-known a figure as Alexander was. So a lot of people ask, why Philip? Why not his son?

1:48.0

But our lead designer had actually started researching Alexander about 10 years before we started on the project.

1:57.0

And as he started researching into him, he realized that Philip was

2:02.1

really a much more interesting character because he started with nothing and virtually ended up

2:07.0

conquering and uniting all of ancient Greece. So we had worked on that for a while and after

2:16.2

it was released, we really wanted to add more campaigns to the map,

2:21.3

but still keeping it with the same map of ancient Greece that we had when we developed
