This devotional address entitled Three Gates to Open was given on November 14th of 2006 by Thomas S. Monson, then first counselor in the first presidency of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.

It's humbling to sit here and gaze from left to right

and see how many people are assembled here

looking for what they might see and what they might hear from you.

It reminds me of a little boy in our fast and testimony meeting

a couple of months ago.

I watched him from the stand, and I could tell he was fidgeting, trying to get up enough courage

to come up and bear his testimony.

Just a little fellow.

Finally, he made the move.

He stood up and walked solemnly up that long aisle,

passed in front of me and smiled,

step over to the pulpit, put his hands like that,

looked at the audience,

and removed his hands and turned around and walked back to his parents.

But all I could do is turn around and walk back into the arms of President Samuelson.

And I think he'd rather I speak now than have to take over. You know, you're my friends. I feel close to you, and it's a privilege to be with you

and to speak to you today. What a wonderful opportunity you have to attend Brigham Young

University and to be taught by the fine faculty we have here.

As I think of learning, I'm reminded of a father and his son who went fishing one day.
